Of all the museums we've visited in the world, we've never encountered museum staff this unprofessional and discourteous which soured our experience at the Philbrook.
This truly may be my favorite spot in all of Tulsa. Free entry is always on the second Saturday of every month, and their movie nights in the late summer/early Fall are an absolute blast (and also free). I will always be a long-time supporter of this amazing establishment.
Philbrook Museum has been a major influence on my appreciation of art ever since I first visited for a field trip in Middle school. Their collection ranges from classical frescos that capture Biblical tales and the martyrdom of saints to contemporary pieces that push the very definition of art. As of this writing, several pieces from their "hidden" collection is on display- pieces that don't exactly "fit" to be on display regularly. I highly recommend checking out this particular exhibit, as some of these works may not be seen again for some time.
WORLD CLASS. A must see when in Tulsa. It is easy to find and get to. Plan on spending time here. Lots of eye candy to make you happy. The staff is friendly. The facility is clean and bright. I do not know anyone in Tulsa that has 1 bad thing to say about the Philbrook Museum.
We had just entered patio to garden when a woman security guard or curator yelled down at us from second floor balcony saying we needed to leave because museum was closed. Our group of four adults saw that guests were still roaming the garden, taking pictures and hanging out at the far end of the property in the gazebo, so I replied that I wanted to quickly take some pictures but this woman was really rude in her tone and protested. We did not see her address the Caucasian guests in this manner or rush down to usher people out as she did to us, so that was especially upsetting she addressed us with such attitude.
We decided to leave and while exiting through the front, we noticed they were still selling tickets. We hesitated to mention the rude incident, but it didn't seem fair a museum would continue to sell tickets while we were told to leave because museum was closed so we talked to the ticket sellers. They agreed given the time there was plenty of time for photos and were confused the woman had acted this way and apologized for her bad behavior.
The mansion itself was beautiful and the small collection of art was pleasant. Really a shame that we traveled from the west coast to visit and were not allowed to see the garden, which was the highlight for me, and talked to in such a way.
Rude museum staff--rushed us out 20 minutes prior to closing telling us we needed to leave because museum was closed.
I go every time I can which is 3 or 4 times a year. One of my favorite places to go. I love everything about it.
